What is SB31?
It is the Senate Bill that the legislature passed during the 2023 General Session, which created the beehive flag that will become effective in March 2024.
What is the Utah Flag State Initiative?
The state initiative for the Utah flag is a petition by the voters of Utah proposing that there be only one flag and that it be our Utah State pictured on this page. If enough signatures are gathered, the proposed law that would restore the Utah state flag would be placed on a ballot for people to vote on Tuesday, November 5, 2024.
How many signatures are required?
As of 2023, a total of 134,298 signatures of registered voters are required, and signature thresholds have to be met in at least 26 of the 29 Senate districts. Click here to review the Senate district number thresholds. That may seem overwhelming, but once you break it down, it is easily achievable. Each senate district has a separate signature requirement threshold. Click here to review how many signatures are required in your district.
Can we gather signatures electronically?
No, the Utah law that allows for electronic signature still requires that the signature gathering in person, but it provides for it to be done on a device provided by the sponsors. This law was not written for the people. It was written for companies and politicians.
What is a petition packet?
A petition packet includes a cover page, and a copy of the proposed law, with 50 signature sheets. If you volunteer to take a packet, you are volunteering to gather 50 signatures (from Utah registered voters) and return the packet within 25 days to the district coordinator or the volunteer who gave you your packet. State initiatives are required to submit a packet within 30 days from the date of the first signature of the packet.
What if I signed the referendum, can I sign this packet?
Yes, it is like we are starting over. We gathered 50,000+ in 3 weeks but the 40-day time limit to collect signatures and the weather were tough. We can do this, we have a lot more time!
What were the resolutions that were passed by the republican party?
State delegates, who elect their party nominee passed two resolutions. One said the party rejects the new Utah flag that will be effective March 9, 2024. One said they will fix the Republican caucus system and repeal the law which allowed politicians to gather signatures and avoid the party caucus system. This was only for the Republican Party. Signatures still need to be gathered for the state initiative.
